How You Will Make An Impact

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will combine your expertise in AI, personalization, and advanced analytics with your leadership skills to drive impactful data science initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Product Data Science, you’ll tackle complex challenges like building cutting-edge recommendation systems, leveraging large language models (LLMs), and optimizing customer experiences through traditional A/B testing and analytics. You’ll lead large projects, mentor team members, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape our strategy and delight customers with data-driven innovation.

In This Role You’ll Get To:

  • Be a Technical Lead: Oversee the design, development, and deployment of data science solutions, including AI-driven personalization engines, recommendation systems, and NLP applications using LLMs.

  • Manage Large Projects:Take ownership of end-to-end initiatives, collaborating with cross-functional teams, managing stakeholder expectations, and ensuring timely delivery of impactful outcomes.

  • Conduct Advanced Analytics: Design and analyze experiments (e.g., A/B tests) and generate actionable insights to optimize the customer experience and drive business growth.

  • Drive AI Innovation:Implement state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and techniques, including deep learning and reinforcement learning, to address challenges like predictive analytics and personalization.

  • Collaborate and Mentor: Work closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and Data Scientists to define project goals, while mentoring junior team members to elevate the overall technical expertise of the team.

  • Enhance Infrastructure:Partner with engineering teams to improve data pipelines, tooling, and infrastructure, enabling efficient experimentation and analysis at scale.

  • Communicate Results: Translate complex technical analyses into actionable insights, clearly communicating findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.

  • Stay Ahead of Trends: Continuously research and incorporate emerging trends in AI, machine learning, and data science to ensure our solutions remain cutting-edge.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience: 6+ years in data science, machine learning, or a related field, with a demonstrated track record of leading technical projects and managing multiple stakeholders. A graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent industry experience.

  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in Python and SQL, along with experience in machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and deploying models at scale.

  • AI Specialization: Deep experience in personalization, recommendation systems, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing (NLP) using LLMs.

  • Experimental Design: Strong expertise in designing and analyzing experiments, including A/B tests and advanced statistical methods.

  • Project Leadership:Proven ability to manage large-scale projects, align stakeholders, and deliver impactful results in a fast-paced environment.

  • Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.

  • Collaboration: Experience partnering with product, engineering, and business teams to develop and implement data-driven solutions.

  • Visualization Tools: Proficiency in data visualization platforms such as Looker, Tableau, or similar tools.

  • Growth Mindset: Eager to take on challenges, learn new skills, and mentor others to build a strong team culture.

  • Preferred: Background in e-commerce, marketplaces, or a related industry, with a focus on user behavior and optimization.

At ThredUp, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays between $210,000 and $230,000, and your actual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Many ThredUp employees also have the opportunity to own shares of ThredUp stock. ThredUp employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, as well as a discount when purchasing ThredUp stock if voluntarily participating in ThredUp’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Subject to eligibility requirements, you’ll also receive other benefits: Comprehensive medical & dental coverage, vision, 401k, life and disability insurance.
