Full Time Chemistry Instructor

Summary

This is a full-time teaching position in the Chemistry Department which includes lecture, lab, and recitation instruction in the following courses: Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. The instructor will also maintain labs, equipment and reagent inventories, and to develop and revise courses as needed. Responsibilities may include the possibility of teaching night, weekend, summer, and online courses. This individual must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with others, participate in curriculum development, and follow teaching effectiveness guidelines. This person will enjoy working with diverse populations, have good listening skills and the ability to understand the needs of others, be able to deal with interruptions in a patient manner, and maintain a high work ethic and integrity. The successful candidate will have the ability to be engaging to students in the learning process, be approachable, organized, and support the College mission.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in Chemistry or Master's degree in a related field with 18 graduate hours in Chemistry

  • Coursework in introductory, general chemistry, or organic chemistry

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in chemistry

  • 18 graduate credits in physics

  • Teaching experience in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, or organic chemistry

  • Teaching experience in web-based and non-traditional courses

  • Experience with student advising

  • Experience with curriculum development to the preferred qualifications

Essential Responsibilities

Provide classroom/lab instruction to students and develop theory including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats

Supervisory Responsibilities

May provide functional supervision for student employees in the labs. Supervises others in accordance with NMC's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, recognizing employees; addressing performance problems or gaps.

Teaching Responsibilities

When teaching any classroom or lab courses, the instructor will meet the responsibilities of regular faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, Faculty Professional Development, Support of College, Community Initiatives, and Professional Qualities and Abilities.

  • Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities

  • Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques

  • Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process

  • Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings

  • Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle

  • Is accessible to students during formal office hours and other times as needed

  • Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems
