Director of Engineering - 5*L Chain Hotel in Milan

For a 5-star Luxury chain hotel in Milan, we’re looking for a:

Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering is responsible for overseeing all engineering, maintenance, and facilities operations. The role includes managing the hotel's physical infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, ensuring the property is maintained to the highest standards of safety, functionality, and luxury. The Director of Engineering plays a crucial role in sustainability efforts, capital improvements, and ensuring a seamless guest experience through operational efficiency. The position also focuses on maintaining compliance with local building codes, health and safety standards, and brand requirements.

Main duties:

 Maintenance & Operations Management:

  • Oversee daily operations of the engineering department, ensuring that all equipment, systems, and infrastructure are functioning efficiently and without interruption.
  • Establish preventive maintenance schedules for all hotel facilities, including guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house, and exterior spaces.
  • Monitor energy consumption, waste management, and water usage, implementing cost-effective measures to reduce the hotel’s environmental footprint.

 Project Management & Renovations:

  • Lead capital improvement projects, renovations, and refurbishment initiatives in collaboration with the corporate office and hotel ownership.
  • Coordinate with designers, contractors, and external vendors to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Ensure that all refurbishments and upgrades reflect the brand’s luxury standards while adhering to budget constraints.

Health, Safety, and Compliance:

  • Ensure that the hotel complies with all local, state, and international building regulations, fire safety, health standards, and environmental laws.
  • Maintain a detailed and organized record of inspections, licenses, and certifications required for hotel operations.
  • Implement and oversee risk management strategies to safeguard guests, staff, and the hotel property, including fire safety programs, emergency procedures, and training.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead, train, and develop a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring the department operates efficiently and to the highest standards.
  • Create a positive, performance-driven environment by setting clear objectives and conducting regular performance reviews.
  • Provide ongoing training for the engineering team in technical skills, safety protocols, and luxury service standards to ensure the highest quality of work and guest satisfaction.

Budget & Resource Management:

  • Develop and manage the engineering department’s operating budget, controlling costs while maintaining high service standards.
  • Review and approve all purchases for parts, materials, and equipment, ensuring cost-effectiveness and timely delivery.
  • Track expenses related to energy, water, and utility usage and implement strategies to reduce costs.

 Collaboration with Other Departments:

  • Work closely with the General Manager, housekeeping, food & beverage, and other departments to ensure seamless operations and guest satisfaction.
  • Assist with coordinating repairs and maintenance activities in guest rooms and public areas without disrupting the guest experience.
  • Actively participate in management meetings, contributing insights on property maintenance and improvement initiatives.

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in engineering and facilities management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role at a 5-star luxury hotel, resort, real estate or hospitals.
  • Proven track record in managing large-scale engineering operations, including building systems, preventative maintenance programs, and renovation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems
  • Leadership and people management skills, with the ability to mentor, motivate, and manage a diverse engineering team.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with local building codes, fire safety standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with various departments and external contractors.
  • Fluent in Italian and English. Any additional language will be considered a plus.
